Charcoal Roof Colour
Charcoal is not a Colorbond colour. It is a Dulux Acratex paint colour, which is why you will sometimes ask for charcoal and be quoted Monument instead: Monument is the Colorbond steel colour closest to it, and Dulux themselves describe Monument as a dark charcoal. On a tile roof being restored, Charcoal is the one you actually get. It is a near-black grey with no colour cast at all, no blue and no green, which makes it the most neutral of the dark options and the best at hiding dirt between washes. It works hardest against white or light rendered walls, where the contrast does the work. It is also one of the hottest colours in the range, absorbing well over 90 per cent of the solar energy that hits it, so on an unshaded Adelaide roof it is worth a conversation about insulation before you commit. The roof below is a Highbury home, late-1990s Boral concrete shingles that had gone porous and chalky, restored with a Dulux high-build primer and two heavy coats.
